Gordon Ramsay has been named Britain's best celebrity chef in a poll of London restaurant-goers.

The television cook is praised as a "big personality" whose food is "pure genius".

Nearly a quarter of the 3,500 people who voted in the survey by www.squaremeal.co.u k plumped for Ramsay.

Second place went to Tom Aikens, whose eponymous Chelsea

restaurant has won him widespread acclaim but who is not known for TV appearances.

A Square Meal spokeswoman said: "It's the cooking that matters and the voters say his food is imaginative and visually dazzling."

Heston Blumenthal, whose restaurant The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, has three Michelin stars, was third. Jamie Oliver

was fourth. Ramsay's old foe Antony Worrall Thompson - whom Ramsay once dubbed a "squashed Bee Gee" - comes in at 10th.

The top 10 are: 1 Gordon Ramsay; 2 Tom Aikens; 3 Heston Blumenthal; 4 Jamie Oliver; 5= Giorgio Locatelli and Marco Pierre White; 7= Jean-Christophe Novelli and Gary Rhodes; 9 Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers; 10 Anthony Worrall Thompson.
