A Soho dining room which provides a three course dinner for just £15 has been named Britain's best new restaurant.

Arbutus today took top prize in the prestigious annual Rémy Martin Restaurant Awards, which recognise the best emerging talent of the UK restaurant scene.

Under head chef Anthony Demetre, Arbutus has been praised for its cuisine and its modest prices.

It offers diners a lunch or pre-theatre threecourse-meal for £15, while the a la carte menu is £25 per person. The food is French and European.

Evening Standard food critic Fay Maschler described it as "the best value food and wine in Soho" and the restaurant, which opened in May, recently won a Time Out award for London's best restaurant.

Today's awards are based on nearly 90,000 independent reviews, from some 8,000 regular restaurant goers, submitted to the Harden's UK Restaurant Guide 2007. Past winners of the award include Tom Aikens - now one of the most acclaimed chefs in Britain. Four other London restaurants were commended in the awards:

  • Galvin At Windows, Mayfair. Expensive French restaurant with stunning 360 degree views over London.
  • Wright Brothers, Borough Market. Oyster bar with "immaculately fresh" seafood.
  • Upstairs, Brixton. " Intimate" French restaurant.
  • Yakitoria, Paddington. Oriental restaurant with a wide ranging menu.

Richard Harden, coeditor of Harden's UK Restaurants 2007, said: "The winners reflect a very good cross- section of what makes London such a great dining destination."
