Gordon Ramsay has won a top award for his services to the capital's thriving culinary scene.

The chef received the Outstanding Achievement accolade at the Visit London Awards for his nine restaurants in the capital, which include Petrus.

Paul Charles, director of communications for sponsor Virgin Atlantic, said: "Over the last 10 years, Gordon has transformed London cuisine, creating not only a legacy of successful restaurants but also developing a new breed of world-class chefs."

The annual awards, co-sponsored by the Evening Standard, honour the best in tourism.

GMTV presenter Kate Garraway hosted a ceremony at the Roundhouse in Camden last night attended by more than 800 guests.

Readers helped pick Tate Modern and The Lion King musical as joint winners of the Evening Standard's Entertainment Award.
