Critic's Choice: Where to eat burgers
Charles Campion, Evening Standard30 Jan 2007
From a fine old-fashioned joint with a posh French name to a great survivor that has been plying it's trade since 1971, Charles Campion reveals where to order burgers that are a cut above the rest...
Hachè
24 Inverness Street, NW1
It may have a posh French name (derived from steak hachè) but it is still a fine old fashioned hamburger joint. Good burgers in good bread and they come cooked as requested. £14pp ex-drinks. (020 7485 9100)
Hard Rock Cafe
150 Old Park Lane, W1
The Hard Rock is a great survivor, having plied its trade since 1971. Enjoy the loud music, slick service and pretty decent hamburgers plus the joy of knowing that this was the original Hard Rock. £20pp ex-drinks. (020 7629 0382)
Gourmet Burger Kitchen
44 Northcote Road, SW11
This chain was started by some New Zealanders and has gone on to prosper. A sensible emphasis on the quality of the meat and a cheerful atmosphere keeps them busy. £12pp ex-drinks (020 7228 3309)

I've visited the gourmet burger kitchen in both Fulham and Soho and each time has been a disappointment. The menu always sounds mouthwatering but most of what you get is bread and very awful bread at that or a stomach churning concoction of heavy cheese and poor beef with some fruit or pickle to cheer it up a bit!
A very young and indifferent staff and surprisingly bland ingredients combine to make an expensive and forgetable experience - restaurant food for the McDonalds generation!

The chips are tasteless at the Gourmet burger Kitchen, although the burgers are good. Please use real potatoes.
