Critic's Choice: Where to take afternoon tea

If you are interested in a spot of afternoon tea, Charles Campion directs you to the best places to cater for your tastes

Inn the Park
St James's Park, SW1
Tea in the park is a great pleasure here: try buttermilk scones with clotted cream and jam from the excellent Rosebud Preserve company, plus finger sandwiches and one of several cakes. Or opt for high tea and a glass of wine.
£20pp ex-drinks. (020 7451 9999).

The Wolseley
160 Piccadilly, W1
Fruit scones, top quality jam, and suitably indulgent clotted cream are fixtures here, while the Sachertorte is very good if you are in need of a chocolate fix. Half a dozen different teas are brewed in the pot, that comes with an elegant silver strainer. £20pp ex-drinks (020 7499 6996).

Homage Patisserie at the Waldorf Hilton
Aldwych, WC2
The Waldorf Palm Court's reputation for tea dances (there's a Tea Tango extravaganza on 10 June) unfairly overshadows the Patisserie, which is an elegant afternoon tea spot. Tea and cakes are served with aplomb. £25pp ex-drinks. (020 7836 2400).
