Sumo Salad
Fresh from Australia, this is a one-stop shop for tasty and low-calorie lunch bargains. They will tailor-make salads or you can buy pre-made, boxed versions with anything from low-GI chicken or Moroccan lamb to butternut squash. Each one will set you back a reasonable £4.95.
(8 Byward Street, EC3, 020 7929 6344, www.sumosalad.uk.com)

Chop'd
If you're the organised type, ring up Chop'd first thing and, come lunchtime, your very own creation will be waiting in their fridge. Imaginative salad options range from warm chick pea and chorizo to smoked mackerel kedgeree. Arrive early to bag a table outside and avoid queueing.
(1-3 Leadenhall Market, EC3, 020 7626 3706, www.chopd.co.uk)

Leon
These guys want to make us healthy ever after — their Original Superfood Salad comes with alfalfa, avocado, quinoa and feta. Or say hello to edamame and haricot beans in a bowl of Grilled Chicken Superfood. Seasonal specials change daily and while they might set you back a fair bit they will certainly keep your heart happy.
(12 Ludgate Circus, EC4, plus branches in the City and West End, 020 7489 1580, www.leonrestaurant.co.uk)

Manicomio
Slightly further up the price spectrum, this airy, glass-fronted Italian restaurant does a tasty buffalo mozzarella and grilled vegetable salad for £9.50 or an organic salmon Niçoise for the same price. Their beetroot and fennel plate is available as a side order, as are the cime di rapa, the Italian version of turnips.
(Gutter Lane, EC2, 020 7726 5010, www.manicomio.co.uk)

The Place Below
Slotted inside a cool Norman crypt, mixing and matching is the name of the game here. You can choose a roast aubergine and pine nut salad for £7.75 served with saffron rice, roasted cherry tomatoes and baba ganoush. If you have a nose for a bargain you'll enjoy the price drop before 1.30pm or after 2.30pm.

I am sorry that Victoria did not mention Pod - podfood.com - who have three outlets in the city.

They serve six delicious types of salad from the English Garden salad at £2.95 to a lovely crunchy indian slaw and mango chutney at £4.25.

Delicious!!

Its a shame the only place you can get a salad is in the East End! I actually love salad, its always my dish of choice. And no I am not a 'leaf muncher'. I just enjoy it. However I very rarely find a good salad on any menu..... if at all. It seems most restaurants/ bistros struggle to know how to construct a good one..... they normally just throw in a token caesar or greek to fill the gap in the menu. Its the one thing that really gets my back up. C'mon Chefs! Get creative! Give us a good salad! :)

I agree, five pounds for a salad is far too expensive (unless it could last you for two lunches?) there is a little stall in Covent Garden which sells couscous/salad/bread/stuffed vine leaves/sun dried toms, etc, in a box for £4.50 and it's definitely enough to last you two lunches, now that's what I call a bargain!
