Paradiso Olivelli: wood-fired pizzas

Anchor & Hope
36 The Cut, SE1 (020 7928 9898)
The Anchor & Hope is a particularly fine gastropub, which offers fine, British dishes in an informal atmosphere. In the evenings, food is served from 6-10.30pm but due to idiosyncratic management they take no bookings. This can play to your advantage if you are going to the theatre — pitch up very early or very late and your chances of getting fed are significantly improved.

Tas
33 The Cut (020 7928 1444,
www.tasrestaurant.com)

Tas is a rambunctious Turkish restaurant much appreciated by stag (and hen) parties. The meze are good here and there is plenty of choice among the many set menus. Tas fits in well with the theatre as it is open continuously between noon and 11.30pm. It also offers good value with a two-course set menu (£8.95).

Livebait
45 The Cut (020 7928 7211,
www.livebaitrestaurants.co.uk)

This is something of a historic site as it is the original Livebait restaurant. Many years down the track it still offers fresh fish dishes in trademark, somewhat spartan, surroundings. Livebait works well pre- and post theatre as it is open from noon until 10.45pm.

Meson don Felipe
53 The Cut (020 7926 3237)
Tapas could have been designed for pre- and post-theatre refuelling. Order as many (or as few) of the elegant little dishes and you can have anything from a snack to a full-blown dinner. Meson Don Felipe is an old-school tapas bar that is open from noon until midnight and you'll find all your old favourites on the menu.

Paradiso Olivelli
61, The Cut (020 7261 1221,
www.pizzaparadiso.co.uk)

An above-average pizza joint with a wood-fired oven and friendly atmosphere, part of a small chain that started out in 1993. The restaurant is open from noon until midnight, which makes it a good choice for a bite to eat either before or after the theatre.

How about GOURMET BURGHER (gbk) various positions, always best standard and visiting Americans constantly agree that they are fantastic value.
