Galvin Café de Luxe, 35 Spital Square, E1 (020 7299 0400, www.galvinrestaurants.com)
The Café element of the Galvin brothers' new Spitalfields venture offers an agreeable breakfast menu, including good coffee and porridge served with banana and honey (£3.50). Available 8am-11.30am.
More, 104 Tooley Street, SE1 (020 7403 0635, www.moretooleystreet.com)
Reports coming in from Theodore Kyriakou's Tooley Street restaurant More confirm an impressive rise in porridge sales — sometimes there are as many as eight saucepans lined up on the stove. Served with fruit compote and cream (£3.30). Available 7.30am-12noon.
The Fountain Restaurant, Fortnum & Mason, Jermyn Street, W1 (0845 602 5694, www.fortnumandmason.com)
The Fountain Restaurant, on the corner of Jermyn Street and Duke Street, opens earlier than the main store and serves a proper English breakfast, everything from white pudding to kippers. Fortnum's porridge (£6) is served with brown sugar and whisky syrup. Available 7.30am-11am.
The Café Below, St Mary-le-Bow Church, Cheapside, EC2 (020 7329 0798, www.cafebelow.co.uk)
This café sets great store by provenance and freshness — try a sandwich with the excellent bacon from Gordon Tudge in Herefordshire. Toasted porridge with maple syrup is keenly priced at £2. Available 7.30am-11am.
Hung Tao, 51 Queensway, W2 (020 7229 6065, www.hungtao.co.uk)
If you feel that Scottish porridge is for wimps, try congee. This Chinese rice porridge is a breakfast dish reputed to be good for hangovers. At Hung Tao on Queensway, choose from nine options, ranging from “preserved egg and sliced pork congee” (£4.80) to “sliced fish with pork kidney congee” (£5.70). Either makes the tartan version seem tame. Available 11am-11pm.

Apparently they're going to be serving porridge as part of the brunch menu at the wonderful French Bistro Angelus soon. Since the head chef is Scottish and the manager Irish I think I'll give it a go. Especially because everything else is so good!

A good dish for breakfast, really healthy and warming. I cook mine with a handful of Sultanas or Raisins. This add a bit of flavour and extra goodness. Microwaving porridge for 2 to 3 minutes is an ideal and quick way to prepare it.

Why not eat porridge at home? it only takes 2 minutes in the microwave and you can put anything on it or in it. Try mixed dried fruit mixed in with the porridge before microwaving - it's delish! It is ridiculous to pay £3.50 for something that costs only pence at home.
