The Hoxton Grill

Grille is very grating

The Hoxton Grille
The Hoxton Grille serves up a tasteless mishmash of everyone else's successful ideas

Marina O'Loughlin, Metro 20 Sep 2006

Finally the perfect restaurant and bar combination... a touch of Parisian bistro-chic mixed with the New York vibe, served up in the heart of one of London's hippest locations gives you The Hoxton Grille.'

Are you bored yet? I know I am. And if I weren't grinding my teeth with ennui at that little opening gem from the restaurant's publicity team, I would be gnashing them with irritation at this most banal and mendacious opening.

Take the name: it's boll**ks. The Hoxton Grille is in Shoreditch. Perhaps the owners thought that by tweaking the geography the punters would pile in, desperate to score a touch of edgy, hipster gloss.

Of course, any true Londoner knows that the real movers have, well, moved. But the owners are northerners, the chaps behind 'the acclaimed Room Restaurants'. (Acclaimed by whom? Not even my Glaswegian compatriots enjoyed their - now defunct - Room restaurant starring oh-so-ironic chicken Kiev and 'Pot Noodle'.) They probably figure nobody will notice.

I should probably blame the owner of the spanking new hotel in which the Grille (even that extra 'e' grates) resides. But Sinclair Beecham of the Pret A Manger chain has tried to do something truly groundbreaking here - cheap, pleasant, Central London hotel rooms - so I forgive him.

His tenants, however, are a different kettle of salmon fishcakes. The Hoxton Grille is not groundbreaking: it's a mishmash of everybody else's successful ideas, boiled down into a tasteless, anodyne, bare-brick-leather-banquetteetchedglass cliche.

I can imagine the team responsible trolling round London's hotspots with Dictaphones muttering: 'Gloucester Old Spot. Oversized lampshades. Fish and chips. DJ. Daily special. Open kitchen,' all to be regurgitated for our dining pleasure.

We had the odd reasonable dish: there was nothing wrong with my potted shrimps, proper, teeny brown jobs with the unexpected fillip of Melba toast. Bread was good. A 'Grille' house salad was an inoffensive assembly of artichoke, mozzarella and leaves.

We also ate some terrible food: 'Roast Haughley chicken with sauce chasseur' tasted, most weirdly, of Oddfellows sweets: mustily scented and sugary - I suspect catering pack demi-glace.

The potatoes were raw, not undercooked, raw. Our waiter had no idea what kind of fish came with the chips; it was so entombed in a brittle, brown carapace of thick, oil-soaked batter that neither did I. Mushy peas? Don't make me laugh.

We had been plonked at a terrible table, looking on to an attractive courtyard, complete with olive tree, but behind a pillar and far away from staff attention. I had to do embarrassing, Winner-ish waves to be noticed at all.

None of this seems to matter to the chain store trendies already swarming the joint, possibly imagining themselves in Hoxton. It appears to be accessibly priced (although we managed a bill of £120 without too much trouble); and the menu defines crowd-pleasing. I have the horrible suspicion it's going to be a success.

On the drive from South London to The Hoxton Grille, I passed Somalian, Colombian, Eritrean, Korean and Nigerian restaurants, all cheap as chips, all offering an adventure for the intrepid urbanite. Seems, though, that all we want is croque monsieur and steak sandwich. And the marketing departments of restaurant groups are only too happy to give them to us.

I ate a Colombian pan de bono (cheese bread) the next morning for breakfast that cost buttons and was light years better than anything we ate at The Hoxton Grille.

If I felt a moment's affection for the place (well, the shrimps were good), it dissipated after a visit to the lavs. On the hotel's 'H' logo was inscribed 'im and 'er. Absolutely bleedin' 'ideous.

Bland and unseasoned 'mediterranean vegetable' soup, fridge-cold chicken liver parfait, overcooked sea bass on burnt bubble 'n' squeak, dry and tasteless duck confit sald and overcooked and tasteless steak with cold chips. You've been warned.

Average food quality and abysmal service. If you are looking for cheap imitation style and inferior dishes come here. The Hoxton Grille has plenty of high turnover clients from its hotel - this is very obvious in the lack of quality delivery.

Would not recommend and will not be going back. Try the Diner a few minutes walk away in Curtain Road for efficient, friendly service and excellent food.

I really liked Hoxton Grille. The service was excellent and the food was even better. It is not a stuck up type of place, and you can go in jeans or your best ballgown if you so wish. The bar is fun, and the wine is fabulous. There isn't really much else to say. It is a great place and I highly recommend it.

We go to the Hoxton grille once a week and some Sunday lunchtimes. The food is absolutely devine. Each time I will have something different and not me not my colleagues are ever dissapointed. It's the place to go.

I went there a few Fridays ago and I have to say I thought it was ace. Good food, excellent service, some interesting cocktails and very good music.

Marina's comment contradict my experience at the Hoxton Grille. A great restaurant with food and service to match

I had a wonderful family meal at this establishment and would recommend highly!

The atmosphere and service was superb; we are hoping to make a further reservation in the not too distant future.
