Leon

Fast food, but wholesome

Imagine a typical Carnaby Street fast food joint: the bright lights, garish uniforms and ghastly food - then forget all that.

Leon is from another planet and deserves your support.

As soon as this place opened it collected a hatful of awards from judges grateful that at last someone was prepared to serve good food fast.

Starting with a really decent breakfast - dry-cured English bacon, two free-range soft-boiled eggs, roast tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, hand-made wholemeal toast and home-made tomato ketchup or brown sauce - the attention to detail, and the care taken sourcing the ingredients, is impressive.

Like the ethos of the place, the décor is a blend of the stylish and the utilitarian.

The lunch and dinner menu is written seasonally and offers dishes in a variety of sizes and styles.

The food is an amalgam of modern British and Mediterranean influences, so Moroccan meatballs nudge a charcuterie plate and chicken nuggets (but home-made, from real chicken - there's a shock).

There are also 'Superfood Salads', like the warm mushroom and tarragon fish superfood salad: subtitled 'white fish from sustainable shoals, baked with sautéed mushrooms and freshly chopped tarragon, broccoli, baby spinach, toms, alfalfa, seeds, rocket and aioli'.

These are good dishes, appetising and thoughtfully put together.

For a tad more indulgence look no further than the puds section and the Leon hot Valrhona chocolate brownie with organic Herefordshire ice cream.

You can eat well, and fairly cheaply, at Leon - while basking in the knowledge that the food is PC.
