Hot Stuff

Small, Indian and hot stuff

Run by the Dawood family, this tiny restaurant is something of an institution.

Despite expansion and full use of the pavement in the summer, it has only a few seats and offers simple and startlingly cheap food to an enthusiastic local following.

The food is just what you would expect to get at home - assuming you were part of Nairobi's Asian community.

Trade is good and the dining room, though unprepossessing, is welcoming: all soft blues and orange with an array of different-coloured chairs.

The starters are sound rather than glorious, so it's best to dive straight into the curries.

There are various chicken curries and lamb curries, all keenly priced.

It is hard to find any fault with such a cheap dinner.

The most expensive option is in the fish section: king prawn biryani, which costs about the same as you would pay for a curried potato in the West End.

The portions aren't monster sized, and the spicing isn't subtle, but the welcome is genuine and the bill is tiny.

Try the delights of the stuffed paratha - light and crispy with potato in the middle, they taste seriously delicious.

Chickpea curry, daal soup and mixed vegetable curry all hit the spot with vegetarians.

For meat-eaters, the chicken Madras is hot and workmanlike, while the chicken bhuna is rich and very good.

Hot Stuff closes prudently before the local pubs turn out, and part of the fun here is to watch latecomers - say, a party of three arriving at 21.50 and seeking food.

Promising to eat very simply and very quickly may do the trick.
