Fish 'n' chips
Tuck in: Nothing beats a traditional fish supper

Bella Blissett, Evening Standard 26 Sep 2007

From the traditional to the upmarket, the capital caters for all kinds of fish 'n' chips fans.

Fryer's Delight, 19 Theobald's Road, WC1 (020 7405 4114).
A Formica-clad treasure which churns out proper old-fashioned fish'n'chips; the kind that used to be doled out in newspaper. Dieters beware - everything is deep-fried in beef-dripping.

Rock and Sole Plaice, 47 Endell Street, WC2 (020 7836 3785).
London's oldest chippie is always packed, so book first. Homemade samosas are excellent, but leave room for sticky toffee pudding.

Olley's, 65-69 Norwood Road, SE24 (020 8671 8259).
Named after a fish'n'chip moment in Oliver Twist, this posh chippy offers 17 types of fried, grilled or steamed fish.

Sam's, 68-70 Golders Green Road, NW11 (020 8455 9898).
Billingsgate supplies this upmarket north London favourite. All dishes come with a hefty salad.

Sea Cow, Clapham High Street, East Dulwich or Stoke Newington (www.theseacow.co.uk).
Pick fish from the fresh counter and wait for it to be grilled or fried. Add chips and minted mushy peas. Eco-conscious, all three branches now use their waste oil to make bio-diesel.

Brady's, 513 Old York Road, SW18 (0871 3328664).
Traditional potted shrimps and rollmop herrings are great, as are the chunky chips and battered cod. Service is charming; be sure to ask for a pot of their aioli.

Details are correct at the time of publication - please check with venue before booking.

Sorry Neil, yes the Sea Cow in Clapham has been replaced by the Fish Club, but it's not superior - it's exactly the same. Nearly £8 for Coley and Chips (Coley being cheaper by wholesale then Cod so I think 8 quid is very steep), and the chips were oven chips that had been deep fried and they were rubbish (which is exactly what I got when it was the Sea Cow). While the fish was OK, you need good chips too - the keys in the name people, fish and chips.

Micky's Chippy - Pellerin Road, Stoke Newington, N16

The tastiest fish and chips I've ever had. Be prepared to queue on a Friday night... and the local police are always in there buying in bulk.

The finest chips in London are in fact sold at Agatha's on Station Road in Winchmore Hill, N21, opposite the station. £1.

Can you seriously put together a list of the best chip shops in London without mentioning 'Two Brothers' in Regents Park Road, NW11. One of the best there is... makes almost every top ten list.

Proper "Fish 'n Chips" - high on the list of things I miss from England. They just don't know how to make 'em over here!

I have been to all of these but the best is not on the list.... The Nautilus on Fortune Green Road. Easily the best fish and chips in London.

Christy's Fish and Chip Shop and Restaurant on Portsmouth Road near Thames Ditton have really good fish and chips, the fish is cooked from fresh when you order and the chips are freshly cut. Very good.

I go to the Sea Shell on Lisson Grove when visiting London. It has the take away and the resturant.

Sea Cow in East Dulwich is highly over-rated. Small portions of not very well cooked fish.

Fryer's Delight fish and chips have so much more taste. It's the best chippie I've eaten at in London.

The sea cow is no longer at Clapham. The infinitely superior Fish Club has taken over the space.

Comptoir Gascon
The best chips in London!
‘I thought I’d gone to heaven,’ is how one of Time Out’s critics described her encounter with London’s poshest chips, and at £3.50, this heavenly encounter will set you back significantly less than, say, a champagne bath at the Portobello Hotel with Johnny Depp and Kate Moss.
