Ashton pins our hopes on Farrell

Andy Farrell was today handed the crucial No12 jersey for England's World Cup quarter-final with Australia. The former rugby league star is among six changes - one positional - from the side that defeated Tonga and replaces the disappointing Olly Barkley, who is relegated to the replacements' bench.

Phil Vickery returns at prop for Saturday's game here, and reclaims the captaincy after being on the bench for the Tonga game following his two-match ban.

Jason Robinson returns from injury at full-back, Josh Lewsey moves to wing, Mark Regan is preferred at hooker while Simon Shaw links up with Ben Kay at lock.

Out go Barkley, prop Matt Stevens, lock Steve Borthwick, hooker George Chuter and the injured Mark Cueto.

Martin Corry retains his place despite losing the captaincy to Vickery.

The changes from the teams that saw off Samoa and Tonga are an attempt by head coach Brian Ashton to find a line-up that can seriously challenge the top sides - with Australia hot favourites to gain revenge for the 2003 World Cup Final defeat.

England have opted for a huge pack in an attempt to replicate the damage they inflicted on the Springboks up front, particularly in the scrum where prop Andrew Sheridan was outstanding.

In that Group A clash, the backs failed to match the excellence of the forwards and their inept play was primarily responsible for the 36-0 humiliation England suffered.

There can be no repeat of that ineptitude against the Australians.

ENGLAND: Robinson; Sackey, Tait, Farrell, Lewsey; Wilkinson, Gomarsall; Sheridan, Regan, Vickery; Kay, Shaw; Corry, Easter, Moody.
Reps: Chuter, Stevens, Dallaglio, Worsley, P Richards, Barkley, Hipkiss.
