Blow as Vickery is cited for 'trip'

England captain Phil Vickery could be banned for a month after being cited today after his clash with Paul Emerick in the victory over the United States.

The London Wasps prop has been reported by match-citing commissioner Steven Heines for kicking and/or tripping and is in serious danger of missing Friday's critical World Cup clash against South Africa.

It's terrible news after their dreadful showing in Saturday's 28-10 win and the loss of Vickery would be a massive blow in the build-up to the Pool A game in Paris.

If Vickery is found guilty of kicking he will be sidelined for four weeks but he will only miss a fortnight if ruled to have tripped Emerick.

But Jason Robinson, favourite to lead England if Vickery is banned at tomorrow's hearing, insisted: "Everybody must be focused on the job in hand."

With the quarter-finals on 6-7 October, there is a need to minimise the ban.

Vickery's defence will be led by Richard Smith QC, who at the 2003 World Cup ensured England were not thrown out of the tournament for fielding 16 players in a pool match.

Smith will need to argue at the hearing that Vickery's kick was clumsy rather than malicious.

Emerick has also been cited for a spear tackle on Olly Barkley.

South Africa centre Jean de Villiers is out of the World Cup after tearing his left bicep during the 59-7 defeat of Samoa.
