Jenkins rails at tales in Wales
19 September 2007
In short, Wales, who need a bonus-point win against Japan tomorrow to reach the quarter-finals, are not playing with flair, freedom and finesse.
After Saturday's defeat, senior players spoke of their frustration at their initially cautious gameplan but, despite the fact that everyone in the camp is allowed a say in tactical matters, differences of opinion have been interpreted by the local media as a rift in the camp.
Jenkins said: 'There is a campaign out there trying to destabilise everything and anything. A lot has been said about the split in the camp and it is hugely manufactured. There is no substance to it. 'There is a negativity in Wales at the moment about our performances. We are just amazed. We've just can't believe the country that we've come back to, in the way that we've been perceived and reported on. 'Driving through Cardiff there wasn't one supporter who didn't cheer us and the atmosphere in the stadium was fantastic. I'm sure we will have the same on Thursday.'
Wales captain Gareth Thomas is expected to recover from his rib injury should Wales reach the quarter-finals. Stephen Jones will lead the team tomorrow, with James Hook restored alongside him at No 12. Shane Williams wins his 50th cap on the wing.
WALES - K Morgan; D James, J Robinson, J Hook, S Williams; S Jones (capt), M Phillips; D Jones, R Thomas, C Horsman, W James, A-W Jones, J Thomas, C Charvis, A Popham. Substitutes: H Bennett, G Jenkins, I Evans, M Williams, G Cooper, Sweeney, T Shanklin.
