Jenkins still can't make up his mind

When Gareth Jenkins' selection policy was queried yesterday, the Wales coach's response was unequivocal. 'There is no uncertainty,' he insisted.

Yet, with the showdown against Australia just eight days away, there appears to be an alarming amount of uncertainty.

Wales go into their Pool B opener against Canada in Nantes on Sunday with a novice captain, Dwayne Peel, leading a side with a rejigged midfield and front row. Gareth Thomas is the World Cup skipper, but he is on the bench in the name of experimentation. Instead of developing his centre partnership with Tom Shanklin, the Lion will sit it out to give fit-again Sonny Parker game time.

Jenkins' decision to sideline 'Alfie' has added fuel to the theory that the 33-year-old may be restored to the full back role against the Wallabies. Overall, there appear to be five positions up for grabs.

Stephen Jones is among the substitutes, but his return to fitness will revive the debate about who should wear the No 10 shirt - the Llanelli fly half or James Hook, who has the honour on Sunday.

There is also a chance Jones or Hook could play at inside centre against Australia. While the second and back rows look settled, there is still a tussle at prop. This time, Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones start, but Duncan Jones and Chris Horsman will want to muscle their way in.

Asked if he knew the XV he hopes to field against Australia, Jenkins admitted: 'I wouldn't say that because we have to see how we perform.' Australia's strongest team face Japan tomorrow, hoping to build up a head of steam before taking on Wales.
