A look to dye for as Scarlett lives up to her name

Stepping out on the red carpet last night, she looked every inch the scarlet woman.

With a red tint in her hair and lipstick to match, Scarlett Johansson abandoned her signature platinum blonde locks for the sultry new look.

But her preparations for the London premiere of her latest movie, The Prestige, were something of a major production in themselves.

Her glamorous image may have looked effortless but the transformation was anything but easy, having started 24 hours before the film launch at the Odeon in Leicester Square.

She was spotted having her hair coloured at a John Frieda salon in London late on Saturday night. Stylists took three hours to create the red hue and Fifties' starlet cut for last night's screening.

Finally leaving at 11pm, Miss Johansson, 21, was desperate to keep the style a surprise for the big night.

She ran from the salon with a sheet over her head to stop photographers snapping her coloured tresses.

Quite how she managed to keep her hair in perfect condition until yesterday evening is not clear, but she didn't seem to have had a sleepless night.

She drew admiring looks from fans waiting by the red carpet as she arrived at the screening of the film about two rival magicians, which also stars David Bowie, Christian Bale and Michael Caine.

Miss Johansson, wearing an Amanda Wakeley Grecian-style dress and Cartier diamonds, revealed how uncomfortable it had been strapped into a corset during filming.

She said: 'It made me feel very uncomfortable. Sexy, I guess, although when you wear a corset for 12 hours, you're not feeling as fabulous as when you first put it on.'

Co-star Hugh Jackman admitted he and Michael Caine had trouble focusing on their lines in her company.

He said: 'The two of us were just mainly distracted the whole time by Scarlett. She's got to be up there next to my wife.'
