A touch of Lady Penelope for Kate as she buys a classic '60s Roller

Her accent may be more Croydon than cut-glass class, but Kate Moss seemed to be modelling herself on an Englishwoman of impeccable pedigree when she unveiled her latest purchase.

The 33-year-old supermodel's vintage Rolls-Royce could easily have been inspired by Lady Penelope, the demure Thunderbirds TV character better known for her British reserve than champagne-fuelled partying.

But there was no cap-doffing chauffeur like Lady Penelope's Parker behind the wheel of the glossy black 1964 Mulliner Park Ward Silver Cloud III "Chinese Eye" coupé – the last of the coach-built Rolls-Royces.

Instead, Kate preferred to take the driving seat herself for a jaunt down a series of country lanes.

Nor was she worried about sticky fingers on the beautifully crafted cream leather upholstery, as she treated herself and her four-year-old daughter Lila Grace to an ice cream.

Flashy: Kate parks her Rolls-Royce

Kate's car boasts walnut trim, chrome finish and a top speed of 106 miles per hour.

Despite having just two doors, the Roller was roomy enough to fit in her entourage of family and friends, including Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, for a trip to a West London pub for lunch.

Kate has been keeping a low profile since her recent split from her drug-addict boyfriend Pete Doherty – but it is never easy to remain out of the public's eye in a classic Rolls-Royce.

And soon she was the centre of attention again as she encountered a few difficulties when it came to squeezing such a large car into a normal-sized parking space.

And her blushes increased when she had to ask her pals to guide her out again and through a narrow gateway.

Vintage Silver Clouds sell for upwards of £15,000, and are highly prized by the cognoscenti. Other fans include the Duchess of York, who was photographed in one in April, and film-maker Michael Winner.
