'All goes to plan,' as cancer-stricken Jade Goody has eight-hour hysterectomy

Jade Goody has undergone a gruelling eight-hour operation as surgeons fight to save her from the grasp of cervical cancer.

The Big Brother star had a radical hysterectomy to remove her womb, which means the mother-of-two will be unable to have any more children.

Her publicist Max Clifford told MailOnline tonight that the 27-year-old had come through the operation and would now be in intensive care for 24 hours.

He said: 'She was in surgery for about eight hours, they did a radical hysterectomy and she is now in intensive care.

'I spoke to the surgeon and he said everything went according to plan and I'll be talking to him in more detail tomorrow.'

Goody is expected to remain in intensive care for 24 hours before being moved to a recovery ward tomorrow evening.

Until surgeons operated on Jade they were unsure of what they would find.

Had the cancer spread she would have had a shorter, four-hour operation instead of a hysterectomy.

'We hope it will be the radical hysterectomy because that means the cancer hasn’t spread,' said Mr Clifford this morning.

'I spoke to her last night and she was as comfortable as possible and trying to be positive but was obviously feeling very scared as any 27-year-old in that situation would. She is in the best possible hands.’

The reality TV star looked in good spirits as she arrived at the Royal Marsden Hospital with her mum Jackiey Budden on Thursday.

She will remain at the hospital over the weekend.

Her children, Freddie, three, and Bobby, five, are staying with their father, Goody's ex Jeff Brazier.

Goody's on-off boyfriend, Jack Tweed, was recently jailed for 18 months after being convicted of assaulting a 16-year-old boy with a golf club.

Goody was on the Indian version of Big Brother, called Big Boss, when she discovered she had cervical cancer.

The Bermondsey-born star jetted home after show producers called her to the diary room to break the devastating news.

Goody joined the show while awaiting the results of tests performed at Harley Street but said she could not walk away from her TV commitment because she had to keep her sons financially secure.

It was the Big Brother star's third cancer scare and followed four mystery collapses.

Goody is now said to be devastated that she will not be able to have the girl that she always wanted.

A hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus or womb, normally lasts between one to two hours and is performed under general anaesthetic.

One in five women will have a hysterectomy, but in most cases it is through choice rather than an emergency procedure.

Women who have a hysterectomy which removes their ovaries, as well as other organs, will go through the menopause immediately following the operation.

Each year, 2,700 women in the UK are diagnosed with cervical cancer, which develops from cells lining the neck of the womb.
