Amy Winehouse may be a mess, but America loves her

The jazz singer, who yesterday stepped out in London looking typically disheveled in an inside-out t-shirt, scored a hat trick of nominations for this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

She has been named as a contender for Best Newcomer alongside fellow Brit Lily Allen, and was also nominated for Female Artist of the Year and Best Video for her hit Rehab.

The awards will take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on September 9.

Winehouse and Allen, who once described herself "fatter and uglier" than the Back to Black singer, are set to perform along with Rihanna, Kanye West and DJ Mark Ronson.

The Best Newcomer nod was welcome news for Allen after immigration officials at Los Angeles Airport revoked her US work visa.

She flew into the country on Sunday to attend the nominations party and was detained for five hours.

The 22-year-old was quizzed about her arrest in London in March for an alleged clash with a photographer.

The singer will return to the UK in the next few days and will try to sort out a new visa, which she needs for her US tour next month.

Allen told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I want my fans to know that I will do everything I can to be back in America in September.

"I don't like letting my fans down and this is a situation that I am sure we can sort."

Later, as she was nominated for best newcomer in the MTV Video Music Awards, Allen refused to confirm whether she would be performing at the awards ceremony on September 9.

Allen, who appeared at the press conference in New York via a video link-up to Las Vegas, said: "I can't possibly reveal that to you at the moment ... It's going to be a surprise."
