Arctic Monkeys in seventh heaven as album hits U.S. top ten

America has gone wild for indie band the Arctic Monkeys who crashed into the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart with their second album 'Favourite Worst Nightmare'.

Matching the performance of Amy Winehouse' album 'Back to Black' the Sheffield boys second album fared better than their 2006 debut 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not', which entered at a respectable Number 24, and sold 305,000 copies.

According to reports from Billboard, 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' sold 44,000 copies in its first week and is expected to surpass sales of the band's debut.

Domino, the band's record company, described the new album as 'a more American-friendly record'.

The Monkeys success coincides with a revival of interest in British bands, and figures released this week showed that 8.1 per cent of albums sold in the U.S. last year were by British artists, an improvement on the poor sales performance in previous years.

Their sales will be helped by a currrent tour of America where they were the star attractions last weekend at the Coachella festival in California which also featured Winehouse and Lily Allen.

The band are currently nestling in the UK top spot, and have notched up a record 18 tracks in the Top 200 singles chart.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "You'd probably have to go back to the heyday of the Beatles in the Sixties to find anything that could come close to matching this record."

The recent change in chart rules to include Internet downloads in the official figure means that many other tracks on the first two albums, which have been bought as downloads, have forced their way into the top 200 singles.

Brianstorm, the first single from their second album, was kept off the top spot in the singles chart by the Beyonce/Shakira single Beautiful Liar.

Favourite Worst Nightmare, hailed by NME as 'a bold, beefed-up and brilliant return' sold 85,000 copies on its first day of release in the UK and the group is currently selling one in every seven singles bought.
