Attacked: Myleene Klass

'Happy slappers' attack star

Former Hear'Say singer Myleene Klass was the victim of a "happy slapping" attack near her home, it was disclosed today

The TV presenter had chips thrown on her head and was pushed to the ground outside a newsagent, according to her spokesman Simon Jones.

He said a group of three girls and two boys then attempted to take pictures of her on their mobile phones as she made off in the direction of the nearest Tube station.

Mr Jones said Ms Klass, who recently helped front an anti-bullying campaign, was "very shaken up" and has reported the incident in the Bermondsey area of south east London to the police.

Earlier this year, she helped launch an anti-bullying website called Stop Text Bully on behalf of NCH, the children's charity.

Mr Jones said: "She is OK. She is very shaken up by it but she is back working today.

"The whole point of the anti-bullying campaign was to say 'look, speak out about this'.

"She wants to get the message across about how important it is to report this kind of incident to the police.

"She would very much like to see these people brought to justice."

Mr Jones said the incident had happened early yesterday afternoon when Ms Klass went into her local newsagents.

He said as she went in she noticed a group of three girls and two boys, all older teenagers, who started singing "Pure and Simple - I am going to kill you".

One of the girls followed her into the newsagent and asked Ms Klass to confirm her identity.

When Ms Klass emerged from the shop, one of the girls threw some chips on to her head and the singer was pushed to the ground.

The gang members were laughing and one was heard to say "Shall I bitch slap her?" - a reference to the craze where people are attacked and then pictures are taken on mobile phones.

Mr Jones said: "She has been to the police. She was with them last night and obviously they are going to go through CCTV footage to find them. The charges that the police said they were talking of were criminal assault and threat to kill."

The former Popstars winner, 27, presents cd:uk, the ITV1 Saturday morning show.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "A 27-year-old woman attended a south London police station to report a common assault.

"The victim had been in a shop in Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, at approximately 2pm on December 6 when she was approached by three females.

"It is believed that there was a verbal altercation in the shop before the victim left. She was followed by the suspects who then proceeded to drop a bag of chips on her head.

"The victim then ran off and subsequently reported the incident."

She said there had been no arrests and inquiries were continuing.
