Kylie: 'My battle isn't over'

Kylie Minogue says her battle with breast cancer is not over yet.

The 38-year-old pop singer is still undergoing treatment - but says the ordeal has made her embrace life with both hands.

She tells Cat Deeley in an interview tonight for Sky One: "I've been through something that, as anyone who has been through it knows or anyone who is a friend of someone knows, it's no picnic.

"And I'm still going through it. It's not like; 'hey, it's all over'."
But she said coming through the worst had given her a new outlook on life.

"Having had cancer, one important thing to know is you are still the same person at the end, you are the same person during it.

"You're stripped down, you're kind of down near zero. But still it seems that most people come out at the other end feeling more like themselves than ever before," she said.

"You're more, 'Put diamonds on - I'm not going to wait, wear the diamonds.' And 'Have that drink - I will have a glass of wine, thank you.'

"I just want to do everything, I really do. I honestly don't want to sound soppy or too cliched, but that's the way it is. It's nice to take a walk and it's nice to see friends. I just can't help but see things differently."

The Australian pop princess was forced to cancel part of her tour when she was diagnosed with breast cancer last May. Now she is preparing to go back on the road - but admits she may struggle.

"I'm as prepared as I can be but I'm not sure that I'll be able to do everything that I did before - not that I do an enormous amount of jumping all over the stage but quick changes are really stressful.

"There's a whole other world backstage that happens - six times throughout the show. So I said, 'You know what, maybe we won't have quick changes, we'll have slow changes. And maybe even a little chair'."

The singer has also written about her cancer battle in songs for her new album.
She said: "Of course I've written lyrics about the last year, but it's not depressing. It's not, you know, woe is me, nothing like that.

"But just in my way, I've said what I wanted to say. Whether those songs end up on the album or not, they may not, but it was great to do. All to a disco beat."

Minogue admitted there were dark days after her diagnosis. "I did lose weight, I had moments where you just don't want to look in the mirror, but c'est la vie," she said.

Asked if she could recall her lowest moment, she replied: "I don't want to tell you about it because it is a dark place to be and I wouldn't describe that ... if you are diagnosed with cancer you can kind of imagine that there's a lot to go through."

The singer is still under the care of doctors but is recovering with the support of French boyfriend Olivier Martinez.

"I've finished the main treatments but I still have some treatments, I still have medical appointments, I still have check-ups," she said.

"I mean, it's great not to be in the hospital for a while but I still want to do lots of things. I am so happy to be able to go to Paris, go here, for my family to see me looking healthy and again to thank all the people that really might have thought that what they did was very small, but they all add up and even the smallest thing makes a difference in how you're feeling and your road to recovery."

Now she can't wait to tour again and get her career back on track. She was diagnosed after falling ill during her Showgirl tour last year.

Minogue said: "Even at rehearsals before the tour started I distinctly recall - it's funny how things come back to you - going to my two sound guys, 'Oh God, phew, I'm so tired. Maybe I'm too old for this'. That's what I kept saying. So in retrospect it is interesting. I don't know how much it had got to do with my illness or whatever but suffice to say I was pretty tired.

"But I feel full of energy at the moment. I'm exhausting everyone. My assistant keeps saying, 'What did they give her? Can you just slow down?' No, I can't. I'm too eager to do things.

"When you've been knocked out, knocked down for a year - I am being careful not to overdo it and the team around me do say, 'OK, stop'. But I'm just excited."

Kylie: The Interview will be broadcast tonight at 9pm on Sky One.
