Girls Aloud Cheryl: 'Ashley and I are NOT greedy'

Updated 10:22am on 28 Oct 2006

Gorgeous Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole has hit back at claims that she and her England football star husband Ashley are Britain's greediest celebrity couple.

Chelsea defender Ashley was blasted after last summer's World Cup finals for rejecting a £55,000-a-week pay offer from former club Arsenal, who talent-spotted him as a schoolboy.

Rivals Chelsea finally stepped in to offer the 25-year-old left back more than £90,000-a-week after a bitter transfer saga lasting 19 months.

But his 23-year-old wife says she's been "hurt" by critics who label her husband 'Cashley Cole'.

She told the Sun newspaper: "I wish they'd stop calling me Greedy. They don't even know me or Ashley. He is the kindest, softest, loveliest person.

"People call me names all the time but it hurts more when I hear Ashley being called them. It's so far from the person he is. They don't know how much he does for charity, he keeps that private.

"He even gets offended if I try to pay the bill when we're at a restaurant. The latest I've heard is that we're buying a house in the Seychelles. It's rubbish. We went there for our honeymoon and it was the most boring place ever. It would drive us mad."

Defending his move to Chelsea at the time, Cole said: "People are going to like me and people are going to hate me. I know full well that I'm not a greedy person. I've not come here for money. I've come here because I want to win things and I have a good chance of winning things at Chelsea."

Do you think he'll thank her for calling him 'soft'?

If Cashley and his wife weren't greedy, what was all the argument about an extra £20,000 per week to stay at Arsenal about? And how about the money they got for selling the rights to their uber-tacky wedding? Did they give any of that money to charity? I doubt it! They can deny it all they like, but their actions speak volumes.

Look, it's bad enough knowing these people are raking in such obscene amounts of money for what are, let's face it, pretty frivolous "talents", BUT do we really need the bleating that goes with it, as well?

How dare Cheryl called The Seychelles boring. If she had done some research before she went there she would have found out that there is only one set of traffic light in Victoria, which is the capital. There are no double deckers or limousine and no shops like Prada and Gucci. I thought she wanted to spend her honeymoon somewhere in peace and tranquility and enjoy some of the most beaches in the world. Maybe because over there 'Girls Aloud' means nothing, therefore she had no one chasing her with a camera, the reason she found it boring. Thanks God I am not a fan of Girls Aloud and I am an Arsenal supporter.

You must admit, 'Greedy Tweedy' has an amusing ring to it.
