Day’s picture of Kate Moss which features in the show, was criticised as paedophilic

Iconic photographs of Kate Moss will be at the forefront of a new exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, it was announced.

Face of Fashion, which will be on show from next February, will feature nine photographs of the supermodel taken by acclaimed photographers Corinne Day, Mert Allas & Marcus Piggott and Mario Sorrenti.

The show continues the model's remarkable comeback since her drug shame last year.

Day, an ex-model herself, made Moss's name with a series of "grunge" photographs for The Face in the Nineties which spearheaded the "heroin chic" trend.

Her controversial 1993 fashion shoot for Vogue showing Moss wearing very little while on a bed surrounded by fairy lights - which was denounced at the time as paedophilic - is among those in the show.

Since her cocaine scandal last year - for which she did not face charges - Moss has bounced back, last week winning Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

As well as their portrait of Moss, Allas & Piggott's fantastical portraits of Hollywood stars Drew Barrymore, Uma Thurman and Natalie Portman will be featured in the exhibition which will showcase over 100 fashion magazine photographs.

There will also be celebrated images of film stars including Catherine Deneuve, Sharon Stone and Lauren Hutton.

An NPG spokesman said: "This exhibition will look at the work of photographers of magazine fashion shoot and the role of the model in portraiture."

Other highlights at the gallery include Between Worlds, a series of paintings about the experience of travellers in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Daily Encounters, which is devoted to newspaper photography featuring classic images of Fleet Street and portraits of public figures which will be held between July-October 2007.
