Eddie Murphy demands paternity test after he dumps Mel B

Updated 12:42pm on 5 Dec 2006

Actor Eddie Murphy has dumped six-months-pregnant former Spice Girl Mel B for another woman and has cast doubt on whether she is pregnant with his child.

The Hollywood star, who is said to have started dating the Leeds-born singer earlier this year, dropped the bombshell during an interview for Dutch magazine programme RTL Boulevard to promote his new film, Dreamgirls.

Murphy, 45, was asked by an interviewer on the show: "So are you happy with her? Because she is pregnant from your child."

He replied: "You're being presumptuous, because we're not together any more and I don't know whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test.

"You shouldn't jump to conclusions, sir."

Rumours that Scary Spice had scared him off by announcing she was having his baby started last month when the Shrek and Dr Dolittle star was spotted having dinner with film producer Tracey Edmunds, 39.

Now Edmunds, who accompanied Murphy, 45, to the New York premiere of his new film, Dreamgirls, has confirmed they are together.

She told People magazine they have been seeing each other "for about a month and a half."

Edmunds is the ex-wife of superstar record producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmunds who has written and produced hit records for Madonna, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. They have two sons, Dylan and Brandon.

Murphy, who was divorced from his wife Nicole last April after 13 years of marriage, and five children started dating Melanie Brown, in the summer, and they had been rumoured to be about to get married.

"You shouldn't jump to conclusions Sir." Murphy, 45, and Brown, 31, began dating in June this year - just two months after the actor divorced his wife of seven years Nicole.

The whirlwind romance quickly blossomed, with the pair discussing marriage plans and Murphy saying he was "madly in love" with the ex-Spice Girl.

They even introduced the Dr Dolittle star's five children to Brown's seven-year-old daughter Phoenix Chi, and the singer saying they were like a "great big happy family".

Brown, a.k.a Scary Spice, remained tight-lipped on their split as she arrived in Los Angeles on a flight from London.

Wearing a trademark leopard print dress and knee-high boots, the singer smiled and chatted on her mobile phone as she hurried through LAX.

But there was clearly something on her mind as she hopped into her waiting car - but forgot to take her luggage with her.

"Someone brought Phoenix-Chi to meet Mel at the airport," an onlooker said.

"She waited inside the terminal with her daughter for ages, trying to avoid the paparazzi photographers outside.

"When her car pulled up Mel was in such a hurry to get away she left her luggage trolley on the pavement - suitcases and all.

"The driver set off but then come back to pick it up. The airport staff looked very confused."

Brown, who had been living in LA with Murphy, rose to fame as a member of Brit girl group The Spice Girls - one of the most successful female groups of all time.

She married Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar -her daughter's father - in September 1998, but filed for divorce just one year later.

A spokesman for Murphy said: "We do not comment on Mr Murphy's personal life."
