American TV bosses hiring an genuine ugly duckling to play the leading role.
The star of Ugly Betty is as beautiful in real-life as her fellow members of the cast.
Normally seen in thick spectacles and train-track braces, actress America Ferrera proved she is more than just an ugly face.
The 22-year-old star was at a New York lunch thrown in her honour by fashion magazine CosmoGirl.
Ferrera looks stunning as the magazine's latest cover girl - quite a contrast to her character's bushy eyebrows, dishevelled hair and ponchos from fashion hell.
She plays Betty Suarez, assistant to the editor of a fashion magazine. The comedy also stars British actress Ashley Jensen, from Extras.
Ugly Betty, an instant hit in America, also became a ratings winner in the UK when it was aired on Channel 4 on Friday, attracting 4.5 million viewers.

Personally, I think she looks more interesting in specs`n' brace.
After all, they do say that beauty is all in the mind, and there are no `ugly' women on the planet, don't they?
