Beyonce brought a touch of sparkle to the UK premiere of Dreamgirls.

The Destiny's Child star wore a shimmering sequinned dress by designer Elie Saab.

Temperatures in Leicester Square were plunging towards zero, but the 25-year-old braved the cold in her strapless gown.

"I'm not wearing it for long and it's worth the pain," she said.

Dreamgirls is based on the rise of Sixties girl group the Supremes and Beyonce plays Deena, said to be a thinly-disguised Diana Ross.

Ross was rumoured to be unhappy with the film, but Beyonce said: "I've met Diana Ross and she is one of the nicest women in the world.

"She came up to me and said if I ever needed anything, just to let her know."

Beyonce famously lost over a stone in 10 days for the role thanks to a drastic diet which saw her drink only maple syrup mixed with lemon juice and water.

The singer was joined at the premiere by co-star Jennifer Hudson.

Hudson's character, Effie, is the most talented singer but is pushed out of the picture by the more attractive Deena.

In real life, however, the role has been reversed.

Hudson, also 25, won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress, is nominated for a Bafta and is tipped for an Oscar nomination. Beyonce missed out on a Golden Globe win.

Hudson was a runner-up in American Idol and this is her movie debut.

The curvy singer, in a black velvet dress by Ben de Lisi, spent twice as long as Beyonce signing autographs for the crowd.

Asked how she had risen from reality TV runner-up to Oscar hopeful, she smiled: "I wish I could tell you. I'm just blessed."

The movie also stars Danny Glover, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy.

It opens in the UK on February 2.

Celebrities at the premiere included TV presenter Graham Norton, Miami Vice actor Don Johnson and I'm a Celebrity star David Gest.

A touch of class (cut out the name dropping) to go with the `sparkle' would've added cred to the event.

But `thinly disguised' as Diana Ross? Sorry, nil comparison whichever way one cuts it.
