Coleen said the story turned her life 'upside down'

Wayne Rooney was visiting prostitutes in a Liverpool massage parlour before he and his girlfriend Coleen McLoughlin had even slept together, she revealed today.

She disclosed in her biography how the story turned her life "upside down" and nearly led to the break-up of their relationship.

"I spent days sitting indoors thinking the whole world was against me," she wrote in Welcome To My World, which was serialised in today's Daily Mirror.

The story that Manchester United star Rooney saw prostitutes when he was 16 emerged when Coleen was 18 and the couple were engaged to be married.

"I was so upset, my head was all over the place," said Coleen, now 20. "The truth is, and I've never said this before, at that time in our relationship I'd never even slept with Wayne.

"I was only 16 and we weren't having that kind of relationship at that stage. We used to meet at the chippy or the cinema."

One of the aspects of the story that upset her most was the accusation that she only stayed with Rooney, 21, because of his money.

But she said when they first went out he did not even have a professional contract with Everton and was only earning about £60 a week as a YTS trainee.

When the revelations came out, her parents were on holiday in Florida with her sister Rose and brother Anthony. "I was so young and all of a sudden I was faced with something I could never imagine happening to me or my family. For days I didn't want to see anyone."

Finally she had a meeting with Rooney. "I told him I didn't know what I wanted or whether we should keep the relationship going. All Wayne kept repeating was how sorry he was."

Describing how they got engaged in October 2003, Coleen said they were in the car when Rooney stopped for petrol, reached inside his pocket to bring out an emerald-cut diamond engagement ring and asked her to marry him. I didn't have to think about it," she said. "I said, 'Yeah, yeah, I do.'"

She rang her mother to tell her. By the time they got home she had prepared a meal - with candles and champagne. "A glass of champagne and a plate of my mum's corned beef hash, sausage and beans, that was our engagement dinner!"

She said they would like to marry soon and then they could think about having children. "Wayne would love to have a child right now but I think I'm too young."
