John Terry, four footballers and their weddings

Updated 15:37pm on 27 Apr 2007

Forget Match of the Day; how about Match of the Weekend? For two days in June, four England footballers will marry their respective partners at ceremonies up and down the country.

Leading by example will be the England and Chelsea captain John Terry who is to marry his childhood sweetheart and mother of his two children on Friday 15 June.

In doing so he will beat three team-mates, including his close friend and England vice-captain Steven Gerrard, to the altar by one day.

Gerrard marries Alex Curran, considered by those in the know to be the pre-eminent WAG (wife and girlfriend) on 16 June.

On the same day England and Manchester United colleagues Michael Carrick and Gary Neville are also getting wed. It is understood that the weddings have prompted a bidding frenzy from the rival magazines OK! and Hello.

Terry and fiance Toni Poole are considering a six-figure offer for an exclusive picture deal with one of the magazines.

Gerrard is also reported to have signed a contract and while Neville, 31, may not be - how should one put this - the most photogenic of footballers, the appearance of David Beckham as probable best man will ensure huge interest in his celebrations.

He marries Emma Hadfield, 24, at Manchester Cathedral while 25-year-old Carrick will marry Lisa Roughhead, 24, in Leicestershire. Terry, it is understood, chose the 15th in order to avoid a clash with his team-mates.

It will allow other members of the England squad to avoid having to make the potentially awkward decision of snubbing the captain's wedding in favour of say Gerrard, the vice captain.

Now all the players need worry about is buying four suitably extravagant wedding presents and then indulging themselves on four separate stag nights. The possibilities do not bear thinking about.

It is thought that this particular weekend in June is especially attractive to the footballers because it is soon after the end of the season and allows time for a long honeymoon before having to return for pre-season training and club tours abroad.

It has been rumoured for some months that Terry was to wed this summer but the date has remained a closely guarded secret.

Terry, 26, is understood to have chosen a stately home close to his £2.5 million house in Oxshott, Surrey, for his reception.

It is suggested he has hired Peregrine Armstrong- Jones, the Eton-educated, younger half-brother of Lord Snowdon, to arrange the celebrations.

Armstrong-Jones also organised David and Victoria Beckham's wedding, as well as their 2006 pre-World Cup party. Elizabeth Hurley also used his services for her wedding, which spanned two continents and two weeks.

Terry and Ms Poole, 24, are childhood sweethearts and grew up in neighbouring Barking and Dagenham respectively.

She gave up her career as a beautician - it is said she originally supported him as he struggled as a Chelsea trainee - after giving birth to twins Georgie John and Summer Rose last May.

While her predecessor as wife of the England captain, Victoria Beckham ,was an ever-present on the party circuit, as is Ms Curran, Ms Poole remains firmly in the shadows.

While all the other WAGs created headlines in Germany during the World Cup, she stayed at home looking after her babies.

Although he has always denied playing away from home - "I've never cheated on Toni and I never would," he has said - a string of women have kissed and told over the years.

Now their only problem will be which celebration to attend the next day. Or just maybe they'll head straight for their honeymoon.
