Pete Doherty’s bleeding art

Updated 12:50pm on 14 May 2007

He is a singer and a poet and now Pete Doherty hopes to prove he's an artist, too.

The Babyshambles star has unveiled his first public exhibition of his paintings and prints - produced in his own blood.

The show, Bloodworks, includes four canvases and 10 other original pieces in blood, pen and pencil, ranging from a self-portrait to landscapes and even a crucifixion.

Many are illustrations for his diaries, being published this month as The Books Of Albion: The Collected Writings Of Peter Doherty.

Prices for the originals are yet to be fixed but limited edition prints will also be on offer, signed in pencil for around £350 or in Doherty's blood for £1,200.

Robin Barton, of the Bankrobber gallery, presenting the show, claimed the medium was very appropriate for Doherty.

"His use of blood lends itself perfectly to exploring the extraordinary personal and physical intensity that characterises so much of Peter's life and work as an artist in the broadest sense," he said.

Doherty, 28, formerly of The Libertines, has previously given readings of his poetry alongside regular gigs.

Bloodworks will run at Bankrobber in London's Notting Hill, for at least four weeks.

Anyone who critisises Peter Doherty for his emotion packed, deep meaningful artwork is just to dumb to understand it. Peters artwork is from the heart; as his his music poetry and anything he does. He is a sensitive soul who wears his heart on his sleeve. Its Clear that Pete's artwork says how he feels. SOME PEOPLE JUST DONT UNDERSTAND!!!!!

The lengths people will go to chastise Pete Doherty.
How many of you can honestly say that you've taken even a meagre amount of time away from your 'busy' lives to actually interpret any of his work?

On a side note, John, was the diction in your faux-intellectual Pete rant meant to pass off as clever? It came off as narcistic 'ego saturated' drivel.

I don't know about anything else, but Doherty seems to be addicted to bad publicity!

All very tiresome, all very tedious!

Pathetic faux-romantic nonsense. Silly little ego saturated, self pitying, self aggrandising narcissistic drivel boy. Everyone associated with this codswallop should grow up.

Personally, I'd rather have "Nosebleed" by my husband! And it's a lot cheaper, too!
