Concern is growing for Amy Winehouse following a shambolic performance during which fans walked out of her concert after she appeared to spit at them.

The singer performed at the Eden Project on Tuesday night, following two weeks of cancelled gigs, but fans who saw her performance have joined the growing chorus of people begging the singer to get help.

Back to black: Amy Winehouse finally made it onstage after cancelling several shows but she looked the worse for wear

Disgrace: The shameful moment singer Amy Winehouse spits at her fans

Reports say Amy appeared to be in tears while onstage, hitting herself on the head with a microphone in frustration when she forgot the words to her songs, and a fan said she finished by spitting into the crowd.

The shambling performance ended when she stormed offstage during her last song – a cover of Valerie by The Zutons.

Melinda Trevaskis, 26, from St Austell, said: "The gig became absolutely awful. Members of her entourage were coming on to the stage, obviously worried she couldn't go on, and she would just shout "f*** off" at them. Everyone in the crowd just felt sorry for her."

Wardrobe malfunction: Amy has a bit of trouble with her stage outfit

Fans said Amy was 'acting weird', others said the singer looked 'worryingly skinny', and concerns for her health are growing following her increasingly erratic behaviour - which many are comparing to that of drug addict rocker Pete Doherty.

The bizarre behaviour came on the day that the talented singer, whose album made the Top 10 of the US Billboard Album Charts, and has won 4 Brit Awards, was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize. Amy will go head to head with artists the Artic Monkeys and Dizzee Rascal.

But Amy's spokesman downplayed the incident. He told The Mirror: "Amy was annoyed with herself.

"She is a bit ring rusty after not having played for a while and was upset after making a few mistakes in the set."

Amy and husband Blake Civil-Fielder: The couple's honeymoon continues as a worn out Amy continues touring

At one point during the show, the distressed singer wandered over to the side of the stage for an emotional exchange with husband Blake Fielder-Civil who was waiting in the wings.

Fan Steve Barrett told The Mirror: "She seemed to wipe away tears on two occasions and by the end she looked a very distressed lady."

Hopes were not high that she would appear after the singer cancelled scheduled appearances at last weekend's T In The Park and Oxegen festivals, and was photographed drinking in her local pub despite citing "exhaustion" as the reason for her cancellation.

But the 23-year-old made the five-hour journey to St Austell, and took to the stage in a red vest, her favourite denim hotpants and trademark battered ballet pumps.

Yesterday Amy arrived in Liverpool for a rescheduled concert. Her gig rider included an order for two bottles of champagne, two bottles of Jack Daniels and two bottles of red wine.

Amy has blamed her constant touring for her health worries, but it seems more likely that it's the result of her hard-partying lifestyle.

Whatever the cause, a worryingly thin Amy could do some time off to get herself together.

The next Britney Spears.

Her performance was appalling, Ms Winehouse was barely understandable, out of time with her band, walked off 3 times (once without finishing the song) and showed a scant disregard for the thousands of fans who had paid in good faith to see her perform. She looked ill and barely kept it together - I hope she gets the help she needs soon and probably more importantly that she and her "spokesperson" admits she needs help.

I saw Amy on Tuesday and feel it very sad that such a young, talented woman seems so tortured. I felt humiliated for her. The inital shock was her entrance to the stage which made Beckham look over weight. It soon went downhill. Personally I didn't hang around to watch the painful experience. But I must say, when walking out of the Eden and hearing people say 'I DIDN'T COME TO WATCH A DRUGGY ON STAGE'. What where they expecting? Get real and listen to the words she sings.

- Vicky, Plymouth

I was at the front of the gig and everything was fine for about an hour. Amy went off stage about 20 mins before the end and after this she changed. She seemed very distressed and actually seemed to spit because she thought someone had abused her. Her voice was strong until she lost control. Very sad, I wish someone would help her because she can be amazing.

- Andi, Helston, Cornwall,England

I was at the Eden Session, and yes she didn't look too well but she spat onto the floor well away from any of the audience.

- Billy , Devon England

I am a big fan of her music and we had to pay over the odds for the sold out tickets. The performance was a shambles. She was totally disinterested and the singing terrible. Whatever her problems she has clearly not considered the fans who have paid good money to see her. Not happy!

- Simon Devon, Devon England

I think theis is a real shame. She is so very talented and to see this happen to her at the beginning of her career is sad. I sincerely hope that her record company and her management do their best to help her.

- Angie, USA

Poor thing is a mess, the record label should be sued for not intervening with her, but your music is worth more when your dead I suppose..

- James John, New York City

Dirty little madam. I hope one of her followers spat back at her.
