Hollywood's A-list turn out for Beckham party

Updated 11:09am on 24 Jul 2007

It is a picture surely destined for their new mantelpiece in Beverly Hills.

Flanked by some of the biggest stars on the planet, David and Victoria Beckham found themselves the centre of attention during their first full weekend in California.

The dizzying occasion was a party thrown by their friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to welcome them to Tinseltown.

We're in with the in-crowd: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed their pals Victoria and David Beckham to Los Angeles. Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith also helped organise the event

The height of fashion: Posh's gravity defying high heels

Hollywood's elite thronged the soiree at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Geffen Contemporary Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday evening.

Oscar-winners rubbed shoulders with entertainment luminaries, the fabulously rich and the most bankable action stars in town.

Indeed, among that sort of company, the Beckhams' wealth and celebrity hardly even registered.

Cruise - Hollywood's most successful actor (£35 million per film) - had flown in especially for the bash from a filmset in Germany.

Posing with the Beckhams in a picture surely destined for their new Beverly Hills mantlepiece, came party hosts Cruise, his wife Batman Returns actress Holmes, Will Smith (two Oscar nominations, £20 million per film), and his wife Jada, also an actress and star of the Matrix trilogy.

Victoria appeared to be wearing an extraordinarily high pair of heels and had also clearly not been in prior consultation with Jada, as their outfits clashed terribly. Others noticed how Cruise looked to have mysteriously put on a few inches to be closer to his wife's height, despite her heels.

Inside, they rubbed shoulders with Bruce Willis (£50 million per film), Wesley Snipes (£6 million per film), Jim Carrey (£13 million per film), George Clooney (one Oscar win, one Oscar nomination, £10 million per film), and Oscar-winning directors Ron Howard and Stephen Spielberg.

A touch of Spice: Melanie Brown and her producer boyfriend Stephen Belafonte both wore shades of pink for the occasion

Intriguingly, it transpired that a great portion of the celebrity guests were on the books of LA uber-agency CAA - the very agency the Beckhams are the new signings for.

It was also noted how some 100 of the 600 guests were from Hollywood's Scientology elite, which set tongues wagging about the Beckham's involvement with the controversial religous sect.

Starry night: Brooke Shields and Chris Henchy

Well suited: Matt Lucas and husband Kevin McGee were the party's British ambassadors

Guests - who had answered red and gold embossed invitations - arrived in a convoy of limousines. Behind barricades were dozens of TV crews, while helicopters buzzed overhead.

Inside, Jada Pinkett Smith's band funk band Wicked Wisdom entertained the crowd. One partygoer described how The Beckhams danced together 'like prom king and queen'.

Back to black: Buffy star Alyson Hannigan and actress Vivica A. Fox

Earlier they had toured the museum hand in hand for 15 minutes and quite publicly stole a few kisses as they viewed the exhibition 'Art and the Feminist Revolution', which chronicles the 1970's feminist art.

According to a source the Beckhams were quite taken with a Yoko Ono video on show.

Cruise and Holmes followed and looked less impressed - one onlooker noted how a jetlagged Cruise occasionally appearing to stifle the odd yawn.

But then it was probably not the company that brought on that reaction - more likely the fact that he had just stepped off a 10,000-mile flight.

Welcoming committee: Beckham's LA Galaxy team mate Abel Xavier turned heads on arrival, while Demi Moore and husband Ashton Kutcher made a low key enterance

Tom Cruise took between £35-£40 million for Mission Impossible 3 last year. This is the most recent film he has released. Will Smith was paid £12 million for his most recent film release, In Pursuit of Happiness.

Bruce Willis was paid a reported £12 million for Die Hard 4 - though in 1999, his £50 million payday for Sixth Sense broke records. Jim Carrey is understood to have negotiated a £20 million salary for A Christmas Carol, out in 2009 - but then he will play four parts: Scrooge, and all three ghosts.

How sweet Katie looks. Victoria would look so much better if she laid off the fake tan. It makes her look very Basildon.
