His former lover Kate Hudson was caught affectionately kissing and cuddling her new boyfriend Dax Shepard, also a comedian, during an outing in Los Angeles.
Now many in Hollywood are speculating that it was the sight of these photographs that tipped Wilson, one of Hollywood's brightest young stars, over the edge.
Friends have said that he had been deeply upset since splitting with the actress, the daughter of Goldie Hawn, shortly before Christmas last year.

The couple, who met while filming You, Me And Dupree, had a six-month fling that ended Hudson's marriage to actor Chris Robinson.
Wilson ended the relationship with Miss Hudson but friends said he had been regretting the decision since she began dating Shephard, also a comedian.
Wilson has not been seen with a new love since the split but has been a regular at parties at Hugh Hefner's Playboy mansion.

Meanwhile a police document has confirmed that the 911 call made from Owen Wilson's house was for an attempted suicide.
Although the authorities have refused so far to officially confirm reports the actor tried to kill himself, a Calls For Service report reveals the call came in as "an attempt suicide" at 12.08pm on Sunday.
The Santa Monica Police Department logs show the incident was "cleared" almost five hours later at 5:07pm.
The actor was taken to St. John's hospital in Santa Monica by ambulance and treated for an overdose of pills.
Santa Monica Police issued a statement on the incident: "On Sunday Aug. 26. 2007 at 12:10pm, officers from the Santa Monica Police Department responded to a medical assistance call from the Santa Monica Fire Department at the 900 block of 23rd Street."
The 38-year-old star of Wedding Crashers and Starsky And Hutch was said to have slashed his wrist and taken an overdose of pills at his Los Angeles home.
He was found in a 'semi-conscious' state by his brother and, after initial hospital treatment, was transferred to a detox unit where his condition was described as stable last night.
The cuts to his wrist were said to be superficial.

His elder brother Andrew, 43, made the call.
Witnesses said they saw the actor being wheeled out on a stretcher with bandages on his wrist.
He was taken to the St John's Hospital in Santa Monica before being transferred to the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills.
His actor brother Luke and parents Robert and Laura were seen at the hospital, but refused to make any comment. Police, citingmedical privacy laws, refused to name the person involved in the incident.
Wilson has recently been filming Tropic Thunder, directed by close friend Ben Stiller, with whom he starred in the 2004 comic version of the TV series Starsky And Hutch.
Last week Wilson agreed to star opposite Jennifer Aniston in Marley And Me, a drama about a man's friendship with his dog.
Wilson said in a statement: "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time."

Guys, I don't believe that the breakup with Kate (and her having a new boyfriend) is the only reason for his actions. There's more to it. I guess he must have been unhappy for some time now. I think finding love is not the solution for him (unfortunately).

I guess you never really know, a person can look so happy and cheerful and on top of the world on TV, and the next second this is happening. Wilson may be "known" for Zoolander, but his most impressive works are the films he's co-written with Wes Anderson - Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, etc. Really sorry to hear this, Owen. Here's hoping you get help and feel better.

This is tragic. Someone obviously needs to intervene here. He's obviously a very funny, nice guy, who shouldn't be so miserable he feels he needs to check out early. It would be a damn shame and a complete waste.
