The best movie hairstyle ever? Princess Leia's buns

Updated 20:53pm on 4 Oct 2007

It's the hairdo of choice for those who are prepared to feel the force of ridicule.

While Princess Leia's extraordinary buns hardly had film fans flocking to the salon, they have been named the most iconic screen hairstyle of all time.

Carrie Fisher's distinctive plaits helped make her an overnight star as the heroine of Star Wars.

The force is with her: Princess Leia's buns have been named the most iconic screen hairstyle of all time

Thirty years on, 35 per cent of voters in an online poll said her hairdo stood head and shoulders above other screen coiffures.

The second most popular style, with 16 per cent of the vote, was Marge Simpson's towering blue beehive. Audrey Hepburn's subtler version as seen in Breakfast At Tiffany's came third, polling 13 per cent.

More than 7,000 movie buffs were quizzed in the survey by online DVD rental firm Lovefilm.com.

The top ten hairstyles included John Travolta's greased quiff in Grease, Uma Thurman's sleek bob in Pulp Fiction, Elvis Presley's bouffant in Jailhouse Rock and Rita Hayworth's glossy auburn locks in Gilda.

Lovefilm.com spokesman Fliss White said: "So many fashion trends originate in film and hairstyles are no different.
