Amy Winehouse celebrates Grammys by visiting husband Blake in prison

Amy Winehouse celebrated cleaning up at the Grammys with a visit to Pentonville Jail.

The 24-year-old troubled star went to see husband Blake Civil-Fielder today after winning five awards at last night's ceremony.

Winehouse, wearing jeans and red high heels, looked healthier than ever as she appears to have put on weight since checking into a rehab clinic last month.

She dedicated her awards to her imprisoned husband, her family - and London's blaze-hit Camden Market.

Winehouse was the outstanding performer at the awards, the biggest night in the rock and pop calendar.

She won in five of the six categories in which she was nominated, picking up record of the year, best new artist, best song of the year, best pop vocal album for Back to Black and best female pop vocal.

The awards follow a traumatic year for Winehouse, who has fought heroin and crack addiction while enduring a forced separation from her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, currently in jail awaiting trial on a number of charges.

In one speech, she also thanked her parents for standing by her, and expressed sadness over the blaze in Camden which destroyed her favourite pub, among other buildings.

As she collected record of the year for Rehab, Winehouse, said: “This is to my mum and dad - for my Blake incarcerated. And to London, this is for London because Camden Town is burning down.”

Her only defeat came in the prized album of the year category, which went to Herbie Hancock for his album River: The Joni Letters. Elsewhere she swept the board.

Winehouse was unable to attend the Los Angeles event in person after failing to secure a work visa to travel to the United States until late on Friday - too late to change her plans.

But she appeared via a live satellite link from London, performing electrifying versions of her hits Rehab and I'm No Good in front of a small crowd at a recording studio.

Pop singer Cyndi Lauper — who won best new artist in 1985 - jumped for joy as she announced Winehouse's first win of the evening for best new artist.

The 50th Grammy Awards, broadcast from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, also featured memorable performances from Beyoncé and Tina Turner, Rhianna, Alicia Keys, The Foo Fighters, Aretha Franklin and veteran rock'n' rollers Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Kanye West had led the pack with eight nominations going into the ceremony but left with four awards, including best rap album for Graduation and best solo performance for Stronger.

At one point West was furious when producers tried to cut short his acceptance speech dedicating his win to his dead mother.

The organisers played music to try to hurry him off stage but West argued: “Come on? You're going to play music on me? Just to say something about my mother. I appreciate all the support and all the prayers… It would be in good taste to stop the music.”

When the background music stopped the crowd cheered as Kanye paid an emotional tribute to Donda West, who died late last year following complications after plastic surgery.

Earlier, Hollywood actor Tom Hanks introduced a tribute to The Beatles, describing their music as a revolution which "changed the history of our planet".

"Tonight, we honour the power of The Beatles, the power they still create in our lives," he said.

Cirque du Soleil's The Beatles Love show performed as Beatles producer George Martin and Martin's son Giles watched from the audience with Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and George Harrison's widow Olivia Harrison.

Starr, who went on stage with the Martins to collect the Grammy, said: "My name is Ringo. A long time ago we made these records with my good friends John, Paul and George.

"And George Martin was involved then and now George Martin and his son Giles are involved again, and they did a great job on this music.

"And with Cirque du Soleil it turned into a beautiful dream... It's great."

Accepting the Grammy, George Martin added: "This thing started with George Harrison talking to Cirque du Soleil and I think we all have to pay tribute to Ringo here, and George, and Paul, who can't be with us, and of course John.

"I guess we miss those guys a hell of a lot, but they are the people who are behind this award here. Not to mention my son Giles."
