She was accused of being too posh to push, like many a celebrity mother before her.

But Christina Aguilera has revealed the real reason why she had her son by Max by Caesarean section.

The singer admitted that she was terrified of giving birth naturally.

Baby joy: Christina Aguilera and one month old Max on the cover of Hello! magazine

Miss Aguilera told Hello! magazine: "I'd heard horror stories about tearing. I really wanted a calm and peaceful environment. I didn't want any surprises."

The 27-year-old is not alone in her fears. An estimated one in 14 prospective mothers is afraid of giving birth.

Another study has found that almost half of women having an elective caesarean are so terrified of childbirth that it affects their health.

Max was conceived during the U.S. leg of Miss Aguilera's 2007 world tour, and was born last month. She and husband Jordan Bratman married in 2005.

Despite his wife's sensitivities over giving birth, Bratman had no such qualms.

Miss Aguilera recalled: "Jordan wasn't squeamish at all. He had the video camera ready to go."

She added: "The most reassuring thing for me was hearing that first beautiful cry. I just welled up with tears.

"We can't stop staring at him. We study him, he studies us back. It's just an unbelievable experience, the whole journey. It's just a beautiful time in our lives."

The couple revealed in the interview that Max underwent a bris - a Hebrew baby naming and circumcision ceremony - because Bratman is Jewish.

Miss Aguilera also said she would consider adopting to expand her new family, as Angelina Jolie has done.

Hello! magazine is on sale on Tuesday.

Back to work: the singer, pictured here promoting her DVD set Back to Basics: Live and Down Under in Hollywood earlier this month, has been inspired to record a new ablum
