Not even Valentine's Day roses can cheer up glum Keira Knightley

Updated 01:12am on 17 Feb 2008

Keira Knightley's boyfriend may have arrived with a giant bunch of Valentine's Day flowers, but not even that romantic gesture could raise a smile on the star.

The actress cut a rather glum figure as she left her London home yesterday with Rupert Friend, who was earlier seen collecting the bouquet of yellow roses from a nearby florist on Thursday.

It appears the gift did little to cheer up the 22-year-old star, who has endured a series of high profile disappointments in recent times.

Sullen: Keira Knightley with boyfriend Rupert Friend in London on Thursday

Despite strong Oscar buzz, Keira last month failed to score an Academy Award nomination for her role in Second World War romance Atonement.

Then on Sunday, she lost out on the best actress prize for the same role at the Baftas.

The honour went to French actress Marion Cotillard, who stars as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose.

Still, Keira was graceful in defeat, saying at the time: "I didn't deserve to win Best Actress. I think Marion's fantastic."

Chivalrous: the actor stopped by a local florist before collecting Keira

And Keira has plenty to celebrate in her life besides a healthy love life with Rupert.

Hollywood experts have said that Keira is one of the most promising acts to emerge from the UK in years.

Since finding fame with Bend it Like Beckham and Love Actually, the 22-year-old, who was born in Richmond, London, has become a household name across the Atlantic.

She has two upcoming roles in the next year so far: The Duchess and The Edge of Love.

Last month, she posed for U.S. magazine W, winning rave reviews in international fashion circles.
