For most A-list stars, a pre-dinner drink might be a glass of vintage bubbly or maybe an exotic cocktail.

But for Hugh Grant it appears that a simple can of Carlsberg is a perfectly adequate appetiser.

The Four Weddings And A Funeral star was spotted leaving a restaurant with his on-off girlfriend Jemima Khan in his car – with an opened can of the lager in the cupholder between the two front seats.

It left onlookers to assume Mr Grant or his guest must have consumed the tipple prior to dinner.

The smartly-dressed couple were caught slipping out of the upmarket restaurant Riva in Putney, South-West London, after an intimate dinner date.

Grant, 47, lives nearby in Chelsea. As they climbed into his car outside the restaurant, the opened green can of Carlsberg was clearly visible in the vehicle's cupholder.

The couple looked uncomfortable to be spotted together and tried to shield their faces from a photographer as they drove off together.

Mother-of-two Jemima, 34, is the daughter of the late tycoon Sir James Goldsmith and is divorced from former Pakistan cricket captain and politician Imran Khan. She now spends her time campaigning for the children's charity Unicef.

She and Grant dated for three years but they split a year ago and at the time it was reported that it was because the confirmed bachelor was unwilling to settle down.

Grant, who also starred in romantic film comedies Notting Hill and Love Actually, previously had a 13-year relationship with model-turned-actress Elizabeth Hurley before they permanently parted.

In recent weeks there have been rumours of a more permanent reconciliation between Hugh and socialite Jemima.

They were spotted out together and reportedly went to Paris on the Eurostar for a romantic weekend.
