Glenda Jackson after hip operation

Painful: But Glenda Jackson still managed to walk for two miles near her home in South-East London

She may currently need a crutch to get about - but Glenda Jackson's star quality still shines through.

Despite being well wrapped up, with a hat to keep out the cold and leaning on a crutch, there was no mistaking the double Oscar-winner as she ventured out near her South-East London home.

Ms Jackson, 71, who is recovering from a hip operation, was taking a recuperative stroll in Blackheath.

An observer said: "She went on a long lunchtime walk from her house up to the shops in Blackheath.

"It's about a two-mile round trip and she was coping pretty well, although she seemed to be in a bit of pain at times.

"She stopped and chatted with people and seemed to be in good spirits."

Ms Jackson won her first Best Actress Oscar in 1970 for Women In Love and her second for A Touch Of Class, three years later.

The Hampstead and Highgate MP and former Minister is reported to have had her hip replacement operation at King's College Hospital in South London, a foundation hospital.

In 2003, Ms Jackson was one of 31 Labour rebels who voted against the Bill which introduced foundation hospitals.
