Despite her loud protestations that she would not forgive a man who cheated on her, Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole has reportedly taken cheating husband Ashley back.

A friend of the heartbroken singer has been quoted as saying: "She's still in love with him, simple as that."

According to the friend, the distraught 24-year-old simply could not bear to be apart from him any longer and has said she will take him back, but that he has to change.

Back together: Cheryl Cole has agreed to take back her cheating footballer husband Ashley, seen here last year, as she says she still loves him, but he will have to change his ways and drop his party lifestyle

"Cheryl has told Ashley she is taking him back. But she has also told him things have to change", a friend told The Sun.

"No matter how hard she tried to convince herself to leave him, she couldn't bring herself to do it."

The couple's marriage was under threat after it was revealed at the end of January how he cheated on Cheryl with blonde hairdresser Aimee Walton, 22. He also offered Aimee cash for an abortion.

Distraught Cheryl consulted her lawyer and moved out of the couple's mansion in Oxshott, Surrey.

But last week the Newcastle-born beauty — who in the past month has lost a stone in weight — told Cole when she flew back from Los Angeles that she was prepared to give him another chance.

But that chance will come with conditions, which may mean Ashley forgoing boozy nights out his pals.

The friend told The Sun: "He has a lot of grovelling to do before things get back to how they were."

"Ashley's family have been talking about how the couple are back together. He has been confident all along that she would come back."

Last night Cheryl was still refusing to wear her wedding ring "until she feels ready to put it back on" according to a source.

Meanwhile the singer has received words of comfort from an unlikely source - former foe Lily Allen.

Lily revealed on her Lily Allen and Friends BBC3 TV show that she feels sorry for Cheryl.

"A couple of years ago if I had read the stuff about Cheryl Cole, about Ashley cheating on her, I probably would have had a little laugh to myself," she said.

"But now I actually feel sorry for her."

She has been outspoken about things in the past and upset a few people along the way. This may have taught her to think before she speaks.

It's their lives, down to them what they do.

I wish just once one of these women in the public eye would divorce their cheating pigs of husbands and send out the message to girls (and men) that men are not allowed to treat women like dirt. It is so sad and pathetic that he's got away with this, I stupidly thought Cheryl might be the first one to stand up for herself and do the right thing.

let them get on with it, who cares!

Time to grow up Ashley, and be a man, treat your good lady with respect and honesty and you wont go far wrong

- Brian, wiltshire

So much for her being so feisty and independent. She's just pathetic and has let him totally humiliate her.
Guess the WAG lifestyle was too much to give up?

"It'll all end in (more) tears."
No, unfortunately, it will probably all end in a photo shoot in a glossy magazine on some tropical island, further lining their pockets

Shame. I was surprising myself by developing a bit of respect for one of the WAG types.

- Alex, London

Oh bah humbug. If you say something at least stand by it!

Surely it is a matter for them to sort out. We all say things of what we will do if..... but when it actually comes to it often it can be a different matter. Only time will tell if the correct decision taken.
