Victoria Beckham has made it on to the cover of Vogue.

The Spice Girl and aspiring fashionista is featured dripping in diamonds on the front of the April issue, in which she proclaims: "It's tough being a pop star and a footballer's wife."

Inside, Vogue has devoted 12 pages to Beckham and given her a makeover reminiscent of a Cecil Beaton portrait.

In place of her usual skin-tight dresses and oversized sunglasses, Beckham is dressed in a delicate, handpainted tulle gown by Dolce & Gabbana.

She looks every inch the 1940s heroine - save for one photograph in which several tattoos are on display.

Beaton famously created the designs for Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, and Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said: "The pictures quite coincidentally echo some of Cecil Beaton's famous portraits for Vogue during the forties, and demonstrate the Eliza Doolittle quality of Victoria veering from mannered hauteur to the trashy sexiness of her exposed back laced with tattoos."

The pictures were taken by top photographer Nick Knight and Beckham, 33, said the Vogue covershoot was one of the most exciting days of her life.

In the accompanying interview, Beckham talks about her figure, her marriage and her new career as a fashion designer.

"It's tough being a pop star and a footballer's wife. I'm aware of people's preconceptions. For the other girls, it's their business, but I don't do that any more. My business is fashion," she said.

Discussing her weight, Beckham said: "I would never put my health at risk. Obviously working out is important. Well, I don't. I have joined a gym but I can't bring myself to start," adding jokingly: "What do you wear on the running machine? I can't bring myself to wear flat shoes."

Beckham is never seen without her stiletto heels and revealed: "If they don't have my size I just stick toilet paper in - if that's what it takes to get a nice shoe."

The Chopard diamond ring and matching earrings she wears on the cover were a present from husband David.

For Christmas, the LA Galaxy star bought his wife a lilac crocodile Hermes handbag.

She said: "David bought me this bag over Christmas and he wanted to go to the pub Christmas morning. So we all went to the pub down where my mum and dad are. I put the bag on the table - he got it specially made - and one of the kids knocked a candle and the wax went sploosh, all over it. And honestly, I nearly cried."

Beckham said David was fully behind her new career: "He supports me, and I think it is very important in a relationship that a man doesn't suppress his wife or girlfriend."

While other A-list stars complain about the attentions of the paparazzi, Beckham has few complaints.

"If David and I go out and have a nice dinner in London, you're going to get photographed. I get seen when I want to be seen, at the end of the day," she said.

Beckham was asked about the rumours surrounding her husband and his former personal assistant, Rebecca Loos.

She replied: "I've had my share of bad press and heartache and all sorts of things and it sort of kills you or makes you stronger."

"You know, I love and trust my husband a hundred per cent. It's my job to protect the family. We have children and I wasn't going to go to court and drag up my personal life when my children were old enough to understand what they were hearing.

"We have a very nice positive energy around us as a family and if it's not positive and nice, I don't want to know about it."

The interview was conducted at the Beckhams' family home in Sawbridgeworth, Herts, which they share with children Brooklyn, nine, Romeo, five, and Cruz, three.

Shulman described Beckham as "a woman who polarises public opinion practically on a par with Hillary Clinton" and claimed she was the real driving force behind the Beckham brand.

"When they're in a room together, the one you notice - the one surrounded by the powerful force field - is Victoria," she said.

"To those who say, as many have done, that it's all because of her husband and she just about gets E for effort and T for trying, I would say that quite probably without her he wouldn't be where he is either."

The full interview is in the April issue of Vogue, on sale Monday.

The first photo doesn't look much like her. Airbrushed nose perhaps?

When I heard about the Vogue cover I wondered how they'd deal with her snout and here's the answer - distraction by diamonds!
