She's one of Britain's biggest music stars, but Amy Winehouse certainly isn't rolling around in cash.

The Back to Black star was left red faced after she couldn't scrape together enough money to pay her cab driver yesterday.

Short on cash: after scrounging around her house, Amy emerged empty handed

The troubled singer caught a taxi home from a shopping trip to her local newsagents where she picked up icy poles, newspapers, teabags and chocolates, and dashed inside to find some change to pay for her journey.

But a few minutes later emerged empty-handed - and rather embarrassed.

Thankfully for Amy, photographers were on hand to lend her enough money to cover the fee.

Last year it was reported that her mother Janis was in charge of Amy's finances and would give her an allowance of £300 a week in an effort to curb her spending on drugs.

Strapped for cash: the singer eventually lent some money from photographers

It is unclear if the 52-year-old still controls her daughter's income following her stint in rehab earlier this year.

The Grammy Award winner was back in the studio over the weekend, and is thought to be recording her next album.

She certainly has no shortage of heartache and hard-living to drawn on for material.

The Rehab singer has been struggling to cope with the absence of husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who has been in Pentonville Prison since November.
