'Awesome - I'm just so proud': Charlotte Church salutes Wales's Six Nations heroes

Updated 12:30pm on 18 Mar 2008

After an elating victory for the Welsh rugby team in The Grand Slam tournament, popstar Charlotte Church was all smiles as she hit the town in Cardiff last night.

Wearing a halterneck, 1950's-style polka dot dress, the 22-year-old showed off her famous curves to celebrate her nation's sporting conquest.

Along with rugby player boyfriend Gavin Henson, Charlotte partied at club Oceana before heading to another nightclub, Tiger Tiger.

Beaming: Charlotte showed off her curves on a night out in Cardiff

Despite the jubilant mood, the couple reportedly had an argument and attended the second club seperately.

Gavin left Charlotte in Oceana to be cheered up by friends after he stormed off.

However, the day was still one to remember for positive reasons.

There were still three minutes to go. But when Martyn Williams touched down, all Wales erupted in rapture – the 75,000 rugby fanatics at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, the nation at home and all its exiles watching on TV knew the Dragons had done it.

The Grand Slam was in the bag for the second time in four years and the tenth since Wales first accomplished the feat of beating every side in the tournament 100 years ago.

"It was awesome," said Charlotte Church, summing it up for everybody.

The ebullient young singer had been there to see her boyfriend, Welsh centre Gavin Henson, play his rugged game, get sin-binned and return to help his side to victory.

"I'm proud of every one of those lads," said Charlotte. "But especially Gav.

"They were fantastic and this is a great day for Wales."

The Millennium Stadium is never short of good singers in the crowd and yesterday X-Factor finalist Rhydian Roberts added his voice.

"What a brilliant day, what an outstanding set of performances from this truly fantastic side," he said.

The team had come back from a poor World Cup to stinging criticism. But over the Six Nations campaign, Welsh wizardry, guided by coach Kiwi Warren Gatland, has won only praise.

Before yesterday's game against France, Wales were odds-on favourites to head the table. But the Grand Slam? Not until that 77th minute try and conversion which gave Wales an unassailable 29-12 lead against France, could the celebrations really start.

They went on for the last three minutes of the game. They went on during the presentation of the Six Nations trophy to captain Bryan Jones by a delighted Prince William.

And they went on into the night wherever Welshmen and women were together, comparing their new heroes with legends such as Gareth Edwards, JPR Williams and Barry John, during the halcyon Seventies.

Last night 250,000 people were thought to have been out in Cardiff, where city centre roads were closed off two hours before the 5pm kick-off.

Some fans in the crowd had paid up to £1,000 on websites for a pair of tickets.

Others, such as 64-year-old Neath horticulturist Richard Harman, couldn't imagine who would have sold them.

"Money cannot buy what I have seen today," he said.

"This is the proudest day of my life.

"We were fantastic and I will celebrate late into the night tonight."
