Bashful Keeley turns the other cheek when award-winning hubbie leans in for a kiss

Updated 10:43am on 20 Mar 2008

It was her husband's big moment. Having just won the Best Actor gong at last night's Royal Television Society awards, an ecstatic Matthew Macfadyen leaned in to give his wife a celebratory kiss.

Camera shy: Keeley Hawes pulls away, looking embarrassed, as husband Matthew Macfadyen tries to kiss her after winning his TV award

But rather than respond with a loving smooch, Keeley Hawes pulled away – looking shy and bashful in front of the cameras – and leaving Matthew to settle for a peck on the cheek.

It was a far cry from her bold and brash character DI Alex Drake in BBC series Ashes To Ashes where she co-stars alongside straight-talking detective DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister).

Matthew, 33, scooped the award for what judges at the Grosvenor House Hotel awards called a “compelling performance” in Channel 4's Secret Life beating Dr Who star David Tennant.

Maybe it was Matthew's latest look which put Keeley off. Armed with a handle-bar moustache, mullet haircut and a PE teacher tracksuit – not forgetting the bum bag – he will be guest starring alongside his wife in Ashes To Ashes.

But Keeley, 32, insists she still finds her man attractive: “I am quite capable of loving a man with a mullet. He still looks handsome.”
