Updated 19:57pm on 22 Mar 2008

The hospital which gave the twins of actor Dennis Quaid, and wife Kimberley, an accidental drug overdose was fined $25,000 (£16,000) by Los Angeles state health regulators.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre was cited by the California Department of Public Health for violations that caused "or was likely to cause, serious injury or death to patients."

The incident affected one other child, as well as the newborn twins of the actor.

Doing fine: The hospital which gave the newborn twins of actor Dennis Quaid and wife Kimberly an accidental overdose was yesterday fined $25, 000 (£16,000)

The fine against Cedars-Sinai comes two months after the state issued a 20-page report blaming the hospital for giving Quaid's premature twins and another unidentified baby 1,000 times the intended dosage of heparin in November.

All three children recovered, but two needed a drug that reverses the effects of heparin.

Cedars spokesman Richard Elbaum said the hospital has co-operated with investigators and intends to pay the fine.

The hospital has since apologised to the patients' families and said it has taken steps to provide more training to staff and review all policies and procedures involving high-risk medications.

The error occurred because a hospital worker stored the higher heparin doses in the wrong place and a nurse who administered the drug to the babies failed to verify the amount.

After the mix-up, Quaid and his wife, Kimberly, sued heparin maker Baxter Healthcare Corp., accusing the company of negligence in packaging different doses of the product in similar vials with blue backgrounds.

The proud dad recently showed off pictures of the twins on his mobile phone on several US chatshows.

He told of his huge relief that the battling pair had made a remarkable recovery.
