The husband of soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae has died after a suspected drugs overdose.

Police found Jason Rae's body after being called to his home in Leeds.

It is not known whether his wife, who is best known for the hit Put Your Records On, was with him when he died.

Officers arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of drug dealing.

According to friends, Mr Rae, 31, was known to have addiction problems.

"He partied a lot and had struggled with drugs for years," said one.

He met his wife in a jazz club and they married in 2001, well before her rise to fame.

Mr Rae, who was found dead on Saturday afternoon, played the saxophone and was due to perform with his jazz band, the Haggis Horns - who have worked as a backing act for Amy Winehouse - last night.

His 29-year-old wife maintains a clean-cut image that is rare in the music industry.

Earlier this year she told an interviewer: "I know what people say about me: 'Where are your feisty lyrics? Why aren't you stumbling drunkenly out of a club?' But why should I? That's not me. I'd rather be hidden in a room writing songs."

Of her husband, she has said: "It really helps having Jason around. It's hard being away from him when I'm doing promotional tours, but that's only for a while.

"I've also sat at home watching TV while he's been out gigging, so one of us has always been busy.

"When I'm away, I realise how rare what we have is and can't wait to get back to it.

"You appreciate the time you have together and if you only get three days at home, you make it a really good three days."

Bailey Rae has spoken of how her marriage inspired her songwriting, saying previously: "I focus on the fact that it's not all just warm and fluffy feelings and that it's work.

"It's great to argue with someone and know that there's a real commitment underneath it all - it's not about slamming doors and walking away, but about working things out.

"I do write a lot about love, I guess, from all these different angles, because it's a complicated thing and I think it's worth a couple of songs."

She continued: "I feel really lucky that I found someone that I want to spend my life with at such an early age.

Born in Leeds to a West Indian father and a Yorkshire mother, she was the head girl of her school and a singer at a series of churches.

Her self-titled debut album topped the UK charts in 2006 and sold more than a million copies in the U.S.

She worked on Herbie Hancock's album River: The Joni Letters which won a Grammy award this year.

Mrs Bailey Rae has been described both as the new Billie Holiday and as a "no-nonsense Yorkshire lass".

A statement from West Yorkshire Police about her husband's death said: 'Police were called to a flat in the Hyde Park area of Leeds - where they found the body of a 31-year-old man.

"A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs.

"He is now on police bail pending further enquiries."

A post-mortem examination proved inconclusive and officers are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

Bailey Rae's record label said in a statement: "EMI Records would like to offer its sincere condolences to Corinne Bailey Rae and the Rae family at this tragic time.

"We ask that the media respects Corinne's privacy and that of her entire family."

Bailey Rae, who is currently in the UK, is said to be devastated by her husband's death and will not be making any public statements immediately.

An internet user from Leeds called "maryrose" wrote on the singer's website: "I have known Jason for around 10 Years and am devastated to have to say the fact is Jason is no longer with us. A nicer, (more) considerate (and) thoughtful person never existed.

"Those that deal drugs should be be dealt with in a manner they deserve. If it were not for them, Jason would still be here."

A fan of the Haggis Horns said of Mr Rae: "He was a really colourful character, always fun and joking.

"Jason was an amazing sax player, a complete legend and contributed enormously to a band that was really hot."

The band had toured with hit producer Mark Ronson and backed troubled singer Amy Winehouse.

They describe themselves as "an eight-piece live funk extravaganza combining funk, soul, hip-hop and afrobeat with jazz virtuosity".

Mr Rae had previously been his wife's manager and accompanied her on tour in 2006.
