Les Dennis to be a father for a second time - at the age of 53

Updated 11:31am on 2 Apr 2008

TV comic Les Dennis is set to become a father again - at the age of 53.

The presenter and his 38-year-old fiance Claire Nicholson are expecting a daughter within weeks, 26 years after he had his son, Philip, by his first wife.

The newcomer will only add to Dennis' new lease of life, since he found happiness with life coach Claire two years ago.

Expecting: Les Dennis smiles cheerfully with his heavily pregnant fiance Claire Nicholson

Dennis's run of bad luck began when he was dumped by TV beauty Amanda Holden in 2002, three years after her affair with Men Behaving Badly actor Neil Morrissey.

The pair said it was an "amicable" split and declared no one else was involved.

But Les's desperate unhappiness at their parting was played out to the nation on Celebrity Big Brother.

And his raw deal went from bad to worse in 2004, when he had surgery after a scare of testicular cancer.

Now, the worst of his problems appears to be picking a name. The couple, who plan to marry next year, say she'll be called Grace, Olivia, Amy or Eleanor but they are yet to agree on which.

Les told Hello! Magazine he was "delighted". He said: "Now I'll have one of each!"

He said he's looking forward to having a daughter. “Bringing up a little girl will be a different experience for me. As an older, established dad, I won't be off chasing my career like I did when Phillip was born," he said.

The ex-Family Fortunes host met Claire two years ago at a charity ball for Laura Sadler, the Holby City star who fell to her death from a balcony.

He says Claire is like a breath of fresh air. "It's all 'me me me' in this business, but she keeps me grounded. I go to work as Les Dennis but come home as the real me: Leslie Hestletine.”

Les found it difficult to open up after the heartbreak of his marriage breakdown, but Claire, who describes him as her "ideal man", hung in.

"I resisted emotional involvement for a while because I didn't believe it could work," he explained. "Claire found that hard at first. I explained that I'd been through a bad experience and felt frozen up inside.”

Writing his autobiography reopened a few of the old wounds, he says, but he's definitely moved on.

These days, he even puts down Amanda's affair with Neil to karma.

"I was unfaithful to my first wife, Lynne, after we both married young," he admits. "I got caught up in the glamour of the world I moved in and treated her badly.

"I'm sorry for what I did and we're friends these days.”
