When Mena Suvari hit Malibu beach in a green string two-piece on Saturday it was hard to imagine her swimwear could get any skimpier.

But the following day the American Beauty took to the surf in a scarlet strapless bikini that actually left even less to the imagination.

Sun lovers: Mena and her boyfriend Simone Sestito could barely keep their hands off each other

The pair could barely keep their hands off each other during their day in the sun, putting on a very public display of affection in front of a crowd of beach goers.

Suvari, 29, who was previously married to German-born cinematograopher Robert Brinkham, began dating Sesito, an Italian-American dancer, last year.

Besides showing off her athletic figure, Suvari also revealed front and back tattoos, including the face of a lion etched on the base of her neck and a script which reads 'Word Sound Power'.

The 29-year-old has kept a relatively low profile since her star turn as the precocious high school cheerleader Angela Hayes who dazzles Kevin Spacey in the 1999 Oscar-winning American Beauty.

She will next be seen on the big screen in The Garden of Eden, based on the Ernest Hemingway novel, where she plays the writer's wife.
