Off again: Kate Hudson and troubled star Owen Wilson split for second time

Updated 12:00pm on 17 May 2008

Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson have split again - less than two months after rekindling their romance.

The on-off couple have called time on their courtship, amid a flurry of speculation that they were engaged.

"It was a pretty bad break up," a friend of Wilson's told a US magazine.

"Owen said it was a tough one. He definitely doesn't want to dwell on it. He wants to put it behind him."

Over: Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson, who went public with their rekindled romance in March, have split again

The news will prompt fresh fears for his safety after he attempted suicide last summer after their relationship broke down.

Wilson, 39, and Hudson, 29, first began dating in September 2006, shortly after the 'Fools Gold' actress split from husband Chris Robinson.

But the devastated actor slashed his wrists and took an overdose of pills last May after his Hudson was pictured cuddling comedian Dax Shephard.

But less than two months ago, Wilson and Hudson were spotted holding hands together in Miami, where the actor was filming movie 'Marley and Me' with Jennifer Aniston.

No wedding bells: the split follows recent reports the two were engaged

Reports recently claimed the couple were engaged, after Hudson was spotted wearing a Tiffany ring on her wedding finger.

But a publicist for the actress pointed out the jewel was just a prop for her new film Bride Wars, which she has been filming in Boston.

Since their split, the stars have both been seen on nights out.

On May 9 Hudson and her Bride Wars co-star Steve Howey visited Boston's Liberty Hotel bar. Two days later Wilson dropped by New York's Upstairs with two women.

"He was pretty chummy with the ladies," an onlooker told a US magazine.

"He was certainly doing some sweet talking. He looked happy to be there hanging with them."
